In the name of "Development and Reform"
The sixtieth anniversary of the United Nations carries the theme "Development and the Reform". In order to assess progress in achieving the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals, heads of state and government will meet from September 14 to 16 in New York.
The Millennium Development Goals
The Millennium Development Goals aim to: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and set up a global partnership for development.
Activities in Geneva
In addition to the public concert by Youssou N'dour & Friends, a number of major events will take place in Geneva until October 24, 2005, in particular: exhibitions, concerts, a seminar on the future of the United Nations, and a walking tour of the principal sites of "international Geneva".
Choice of Youssou N'dour to organise the concert
Youssou N'dour chose to devote a part of his 2005 schedule to the fight against malaria, one of the Millennium Development Goals. The artist is a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, "Roll Back Malaria" Partnership Special Envoy and Honorary Ambassador of the Campaign against Child Labour. Several other internationally renowned artists will join him to raise awareness of malaria and the need to fight it.
